Sleep Apnea Is More Than Just Snoring! It Is Named The “Silent Killer” For A Reason!

While many people associate Sleep Apnea with snoring the reality is the health effects can literally cut years off of your life!  Those suffering from sleep apnea are depriving their bodies of much needed oxygen during sleep and instead overloading their bodies with CO2! This in turn forces the heart to work overtime; according to the AHA (American Heart Association) the effect of untreated sleep apnea on the heart is equal to smoking a pack of cigarettes each day!  Proper treatment will improve your health dramatically…..and will help the obnoxious snoring!

What Are My Treatment Options For Sleep Apnea?

The two primary options for treating sleep apnea are CPAP Therapy (a sleep apnea machine / face mask) and Oral Appliance Therapy (a mouth piece).  CPAP Therapy is where a face mask is worn at night and attached to a machine that forces air down your airway – keeping it open.  This reduces the dangerously low brain, organ and blood oxygen levels that occur at night with sleep apnea. CPAP is very effective but many people are not comfortable wearing the device making compliance an issue.  After one year more than 50% of people stop wearing their CPAP and after five years this figure reaches 83% non-compliance.  For such patients an Oral Appliance is the #1 alternative.

An Oral Appliance is a custom fitted mouthpiece worn during sleep that helps keep the airway open, therefore helping snoring but more importantly allows proper breathing to take place. Many patients opt for this treatment option as they find it significantly more comfortable to wear.  The severity of your sleep apnea as diagnosed by an in lab or at home sleep study will determine the best treatment option for you.  If you are ready to get started with getting proper treatment contact us today, we can have a Home Sleep Study sent to you right away.

When you call you will learn…

What Dr. Bouzis will need to determine how to best manage your sleep apnea.  Chances are if you have been prescribed CPAP, you will likely already have most of what will be needed to move forward with OAT (Oral Appliance Therapy).  We will also discuss the comfort and ease of wearing an oral appliance. Medical insurance, although they spend most of their energies delaying and denying treatment,  usually provides coverage and in some situations most of the cost of oral appliances.  Also, ask us about how the treatment of sleep apnea can also change not only your life but many times those around you.
